The past weeks have been busy, work, sickness, visiting friends, L.'s name giving ceremony. Sometimes I think there is no end to this winter - like on the weekend there was again snow-storm - and then days like yesterday and today come when all is sunshine, so strong that one gets headache from it.
We had very much fun with T. by drawing on the back of a napkin. He has some new friends - Pupu and Csacsi (rabbit and the donkey) and they needed small and large trains and forest and other friends to talk to. Pupu and Csacsi are having great adventures and the good thing is that you can always draw something more/new on the napkin.

There are new Spring prices in the shop! New prints will arrive soon too, and a totally new product as well if I find a way to finalize...

Have a wonderful and Happy week, I will be on and off from now on again. There is more time needed to develop something new, and will have less time for this blog. Hopefully will still have little moments here and there, otherwise I would be missing this a lot. This blog was never intended to give instant insight to happenings/design/interior/art in Helsinki, although sometimes it did, but it was just a place for sharing precious things that I found on my way here and there. My love for sharing things is still alive. I believe that many things we have to learn to appreciate right on the spot as they are so very temporary. We have to see them! I will keep on looking! Thank you for following it, and hope we see again soon!

We are back in Helsinki! It was a long and interesting two weeks away, with ups and downs. For my part the highlight was the Sabbath eve dinner at M's and our walk! Thank you! Another wonderful moment was to see my Father with T. drawing and folding paper planes...

Now that I'm back to daily life in Helsinki, I'm waiting for the Spring! It's coming, I know, I can feel it!

This weekend passed without even noticing! There is snow, lots of lots of snow, and wind and cold. But there was last week so many wonderful days with plenty of sunshine, that I'm fine with cold now. For two weeks we will be away, so no internet, no blogging. It will feel very weird I know. But there will be plenty of time for drawing hopefully - already packed some wonderful black pens, and for my own surprise I got hooked too...meaning I took out the thread and crochet hook and will take them with!

Did I tell you that T (age 2 and 2 month) started his "terrible two"? It comes in waves, in big waves...otherwise he is great and his humor is so wonderfully good! I have to learn some tricks how to deal with his waves...P is better with him in those moments, he can be so calm. Any advice?

These days I'm mainly taking care of T, who is still sick. Sometimes it's difficult to figure out what to do when your two years old is not that sick anymore but still sick. He is not well enough to go out and he is able to say no for each and every food regardless what they are. We are over many many books, legos, drawings, imaginary horse rides and expeditions to far-away lands, and 4 episodes of Myyrä (the little Mole)! When he is having a nap, I'm working on some new patterns...

If you are not familiar yet with the work of Aino-Maija Metsola, then it's time to check her website! Her work is fresh and they bring much warmth to these cold days! Im not so keen of the patterns she designed for Marimekko in previous years, but her new pattern Ötökkä (bugs, and I love those) is really my favourite right now!

This was a long week. This was a short week.

Yesterday I had a sensation I never had before, or I can't remember. My eyebrows were hurting. Really hurting. Yesterday it was -15 and windy. Today in the morning -17, but no more pain. I remember my first year in Finland the winter was the coldest I ever experienced, -29, still I don't recall that I had eyebrows pain. (can you call it like this) Weird feeling! The frost if biting!

This week I finished some drawings, 2 new patterns, a new portfolio. I'm happy.

Thursday was a wonderful opening at Kiasma. It felt like family, being in a gallery not like in a big museum. Olav Christopher Jenssen's paintings and sculptors. I have to say the sculptors...well I didn't find the way to them, or they didn't find their way to me. Paintings did. T liked them a lot too and chose a favorite. We also had a chance to meet the artist and talk for a short.

T. loves drawing and usually takes pencil and paper himself and just starts drawing. Then comes the point when he wants me or P. to draw. Lately we have been drawing together also. He tells what to draw - mainly bus or train has been on the top of the list - and we start it. It's fun!

This year has started slowly, but fully packed. I didnt have much time to sit down and write or draw. Last Friday was the official opening of the Aalto University, and the party was really great! Met lots of old and new faces and had a wonderful time! Im very much curious how this University will work. Aalto will be a combination of three existing universities: Helsinki School of Economics, the University of Art and Design and the Helsinki University of Technology. Sounds strange isn't it? Will see!

This year I really really would like to learn how to take good photos of small objects, and set up a kind of still-life. Till now it was more or less unintentional photo-shooting with this and that, but now I have some works that would need a bit more thinking. When I see time to time great shots I envy them really. It has something to do with light as well, as here in Finland it is rather difficult to find good lighting at this time of the year...its really dark, though getting better.

No old photos, no calendar. Im sorry!

Here are some of the 20 coloring pages of the new Sose available in the shop! If you have Sose #1, you will see that the format has changed a bit. The pages are a bit smaller, but this size seemed more fitting to small hands, on the other hand there are more pages. More to color! Sose #2 takes you to homes, houses, discovers maps, and strange looking creatures. There are few pages dedicated to the holiday season with color and cut ornaments for decoration! Probably if I were clever I would concentrate on one thing at the time and I would make it till the end and then continue with another. But I'm not quite of the clever kind it seems, as working parallel on rather different subjects. Restless am I? Yes. Messy? Yes. Will something good come out of it? Hopefully. Am I tired? Design week - Budapest - Design Awards
Congratulation Apci! Hungarian Design Awards celebrated its 30th anniversary and for this occasion they awarded my Father - József Király - with the Life achievement award. He is a furniture/interior designer, with a fine special sense to wood. He has been teaching at the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design Budapest (MOME) and he guided generations of designers. I cant write about him without being partial and emotional! Im so proud! Nowdays he is working on own projects mostly, and still at the age of 79, he is so active and innovative... Congratulation Apci!

So far this September has been so busy that I had no time posting almost anything! Also I was without camera for a while, and lived with P's borrowed camera. While using his I realized how much I have grown to having own camera...knowing each and every small tricks etc.

What has happened in September till now? A lot, simple and easy things, happenings, exhibitions, working. It just feels that right now Im not necessarily in control of time and sometimes I wish the clock could be stopped. But I guess Im not the only one! There was a fantastic Helsinki Design Week, Open House Helsinki, Habitare fair, Ville Lenkkeri's show in Korjaamo, my dear friends K&J got married - Iso congrats!, Rakkautta & Anarkiaa film festival, went to Interesting Helsinki happening - which was great, opened a webshop - still few coloring zines are available by the way!! - found that Ohdeedoh (on Apartment Therapy) had a post on my works -Thank you!, got a new camera that is wonderful, got really nice emails from people I dont even know, had a colorful "rapujuhlat" (crayfish party), spent working days at our studio which is the best place to work, prepared some things for a possible exhibition, and fearcly working on something new right now. And Im still having a list of "to do", didnt have time to read at all...and soon I take my shoes and visit Helsinki Vintage in Kaapelitehdas...
So many interesting people, so many conversations, many ideas are in the air, its wonderful to see how many things are happening around, amongst my friends, acquaintances! It is really inspiring!

Color magnet wall by Anu Penttinen. I was lucky to meet Anu at her stand and talk about this new project with her. The concept is simple and clear. Magnets in all sizes and colors. You can take one or two or a lot, and built your own mural wall. She takes here inspiration man-made, urban and suburban areas, maps and combines it with the excellent craft of glass. It is incredible to look at and same goes with the touch. The tactility of the pieces were very strong and left me with as strong of an image as the visual of the mural. WISA 24 is a result of a competition by UPM and won by designer Pieta-Linda Auttila.

two works by my great-uncle, graphic designer Mátyás Gál from long time ago. He was born in 1909 and he worked as long as he was able to. It was his passion, his love. I admire his clear lines. My Mom has still these two posters from him and now we had a chance to see them again.

my Father had an exhibition with old and recent works. He is a furniture designer and interior architect. He is wood and wood is him! In the past 6 years he hasn't been teaching anymore at the university of applied art, but he spent his time with making chairs (see above photo) basically from "skretch". They are beautiful to look at and so so comfortable...and anyway amazing!

the funny thing is that we left behind rain and grey weather in Hungary and arrived to sunshine and real summer! wonderful wonderful days, and it's so so good to be back! I can't remember when I missed last time the sea and the endless horizon this much. It was a difficult trip for me, but we were lucky to catch my father's exhibition opening and met dear friends even though I didn't buy a hat!!!
It's good to visit the "roots" and re-discover again and again the treasures. Meaning in places, family and friends. And its good to come home here and find the daily life again. Difficult, sometimes very difficult...are these quick jumps!

I like a lot the Flickr pool - organized collection, it's nice to see what people collect, find important etc. As you might have read it in one of the previous posts Im not so keen on having "staff", but I have of course.

no collection - or if one can call a collection the strange/nice/ugly/interesting photos that are plenty then it's a collection.

the summer was here for three days...now it went away and rain came and grey sky...but those few days were great! lots of being outside and in the garden.

T. got a very small backpack that he chose the color himself! ok, I showed him two colors and he took the yellow one and we were so happy about his choice! Now whenever we go somewhere we pack it with all important things and not so important things too and he is happily carrying it and in the elevator putting it on the bench to rest. Wonderful little person.

sometimes I wonder how big flat/home/house some people have who blog and have great amount of things and collections of items that I call staff*!? or if their home is not big how do they manage to store all of that to enable to live under one roof with the staff!?
I'm so so curious as I'm always fighting with piling up staff and they sometimes try to "suffocate" me with all their being. I need empty space and free walls also to be able to breath. this doesnt mean that we dont have at home staff - oh yes we have a lot! - but just need that little place here and there where its free of staff. difficult - difficult!

* in my dictionary staff means objects/things that are not necessarily useful (in many case they are utterly useless) but they have some sort of value for the owner in the form of memory, color, shape, feeling that it creates, 'maybe it will be useful one day', as well as staff that just simply got forgotten and stayed where they wer put last time etc.

today was super hot day with bright sunshine! I got sunburnt! If you are not from Finland you might not understand the special value of this! After a long and dark and grey winter this is something special. Although by the end of the day I couldnt stand it anymore, probably because of my light skin and the burnt surface on my shoulder.

another week of crazy running around then two weeks of holiday without internet! Lets see how I can take it. In principal I will be able to concentrate on drawing and emptying my head from ideas. But till then there is a whole week!

In a nutshell with some photos what has happened in the past month...

Not that we would be ready with all the arrangements and running around because of our moving but now I had some time to check my endless photos and select some. We have a very tiring month behind us, so Im very much looking forward to some holiday in June and some in July!
After the water damage and four month of living in "exile" + renovating, we moved back to our home and continued the cleaning process as all was under a nice soft and extremely fine dust cover. Not that the rooms wouldn't have been sealed with a plastic sheet... and still! Now after the fourth time of cleaning all the surfaces, we can say that there is only a little dust in the air...anyway it's done and we have a great bathroom (at least I think so) and a small walk-in closet that can hide our "staff". Now we just have to arrange the rest and find lights to the bathroom as we are still using a led torch, but it's fun! Maybe I don't even want to fix the light!

As for work there has been some progress in this and that but some are not so relevant and some I don't want to talk about yet. Im learning to keeping things a bit longer for myself. (there were times when I couldn't even wait for someone's actual birthday to give the birthday present...that was very annoying!)

T. is getting bigger and bigger, he discovered one day a box of Duplo/Lego and started to play with it. Every day he makes something crazy and I just love seeing it!

We also bought him a "container" box which has sliding doors and holes as "door-handles". I can't wait P. to come back from his trip and see the enthusiasm T. has when he packs things in and out.

My friend M. came back to Helsinki to visit! We spent a really nice evening out with people whom I haven't seen for a while! And the strange lost duck in the middle of the center was real!

the green that nothing can beat!

we started a new habit that on sundays when it's P.'s morning of sleep, we go with T. for a morning walk on the seaside and either just sit and check the boats or sometimes I take coffee at one of my favorite places. (not that the coffee would be so good there but I just like the place)

My Mom visited us for longer and when she was away for a day or two T. started to miss her I assume as he built this sculpture with her and his own shoes.

My photographer friend V. had a discussion and Galleria Hyppolite here in Helsinki about his new book that I made the graphics of. In the middle the huge photograph is our new art in our flat! Im really happy about it. Thank you V.!

we are almost finished with renovation/cleaning/moving...but it takes still plenty of time and energy...so it's time for spring break for a short while to catch up with some sleep. have a great spring time and see you soon!

look what I found while cleaning our shelves! among old LP/vinyls a collection of bird songs and a book about the birds in this box.

In a nutshell this happened since the end of March:
- Lines&Shapes Volume Seven (see previous post)
- wonderful trip to Amsterdam
- lost email account (own fault) and reset account again
- packing old studio
- went to an opening
- moving to new studio place
- unpacking
- saw a great "exhibition"
- taking care of this and that (many small things piled up)
- T. is growing teeth again, three at the time
and of course the usual and not so usual other things...but it's only 9th of April today so all this feels a lot!

I promised photos from Amsterdam! Here they come! There is only one bike photo and one reflection of the nice tilted houses of the city! I managed to not take hundreds of them, as last time I was there!

Photos are backwards...last day=first photo, not that it would bother anybody, just info!

we went on the last day with K. to a very nice flea-market and met with some of her friends and ate the most delicious apple pie on the corner!

So today I can reveal the secret I had to keep for long time!

The new volume of Lines&Shapes books, artist series is out today and my work is also featured in it! Thank you Maria and Lena for all your work! You can read and interview with Maria and Lena on Design* Sponge and see more about the book here.

Volume Seven is presenting: Wayne Pate, Lia Sáile, George Song, Molly Wizenberg and me. This is the first book in 2009 that will be followed by four others! The starting point of the book was "break". Have a look at Volume Seven!
